APA Announces New Mental Health Registry PsychPRO

ARLINGTON, Va. Nov. 8, 2016 — Today, the American Psychiatric Association announced the launch of PsychPRO, a national mental health registry that will help psychiatrists deliver high quality care and meet new MACRA quality reporting requirements by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, (CMS). PsychPRO will spur future research and develop better ways to treat and prevent psychiatric illnesses.

The APA is also announcing that Sheppard Pratt Health System in Baltimore, Maryland, the largest private, nonprofit provider of mental health and substance use services in the U.S., has become the first major health system to join PsychPRO (Psychiatric Patient Registry Online).

A clinical registry is a system that helps providers easily collect and submit quality reports; in addition, it gives patients a secure way to provide information to their clinicians to track their progress. The registry will also give psychiatrists a simple way to submit data required for professional recertification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).

The registry, over time, will serve as an important research tool for the field of psychiatry to better understand mental health conditions and to develop new treatments that improve the outcomes and functioning of patients. The APA has established a Registry Oversight Workgroup which reports to the APA Board of Trustees and will oversee PsychPRO. Also, an Advisory Group consisting of PsychPRO participants will be established to help the APA Administration refine the registry and drive innovation based on the emerging needs of the profession and patients.

“We are pleased to offer this important tool to help psychiatrists meet new quality reporting requirements and maintain professional recertification, and we are excited about the research potential of this valuable resource for our patients and for the nation,” said APA CEO and Medical Director Saul Levin, M.D., M.P.A. “We are privileged to be working with Sheppard Pratt Health System, one of the country’s top mental health systems, at the beginning of this effort.”

Sheppard Pratt has 83 psychiatrists and other mental health care providers eligible to participate in APA's registry. Sheppard Pratt will have a seat on APA's Advisory Group; in addition, the President and CEO of Sheppard Pratt, Harsh K. Trivedi, M.D., M.B.A., will initially chair the PsychPRO Advisory Group.

“As the nation’s largest nonprofit provider of psychiatric and substance abuse services, we are proud to be the first health system to support the APA in establishing a patient registry,” Trivedi said. “We feel that it is imperative to give people the ability to make informed decisions about their care through meaningful outcomes data. We also want to support dedicated physicians and care providers so that they may more easily report quality data and maintain their board certification.”
