APA's 13 councils were established by the Board of Trustees. They implement APA’s objectives and report to the Joint Reference Committee. There are also eight standing committees that report directly to the Board of Trustees.

One-third of the positions on APA’s councils and committees are open for appointment each year. The president-elect fills these positions. Members with expertise in the content areas of the 13 councils are strongly encouraged to put their names forward to ensure the breadth of diversity within the membership is reflected. To do so, send APA a brief paragraph outlining your area of interest and experience along with a biographical sketch.
